Thesis Progress and the mandatory “i’m going absolute bonkers”-moment of graduating.

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

straitjacket_new1It’s been an absolute mental hell these days! Over the course of the months i’ve been pouring information in my thesis and becoming more and more focussed on the details of Augmented Reality that i’ve neglected paying attention to a good flow through-out my document.

A few weeks ago at my greenlight-presentation (where I present my progress to the teachers who will then decide if should stop or continue), I got told they got great confidence I will deliver a great product if I kept going on like this. Which was ofcourse, on one side, a great motivator for me. I got a professional opinion that I’m doing great. And… in a sick and twisted way, it’s also a great demotivator. “Hey, it’s all easy sailing from here!” and bam! there went my attention span…

Last week my coach (for lack of better term?) at work gently pointed this out to me, which made me realize i’ve had a LOT more work to do on my thesis than i’ve initially had in mind.

But the good thing is he supervised (better term?) a lot of students, so he knew exactly which things needed change and where I needed to point attention to. My personal Obama… Hehe.

At this point i’d say my thesis is at about 90% and is nearing final draft-status. Which i’m happy about, but it’s WAY past my original schedule. I also had to make a big change in the practical part of my graduation. I originally had a plan to make a game for students who come to study in a big city and want to know the city in a playfull way. But as my thesis came to a more refined conclusion, I found out the practical part didn’t support that conclusion at all :(. So my supervisor coach (term?) and me sat down again and busted out this wicked new concept to show the city of Rotterdam through AR-scopes (details will follow when the time is ripe ;P).

On a brighter turn of events. The sun is really comming out these days, and i’ve made an agreement with my boss to spend my last 2 weeks fully focused on my thesis.

So, that’s it for today’s update. I hope this will give a more personal insight on the actual progress of my graduation. Back to work!

Nagoya

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Living and working in Okazaki, and used the European (night) life style it gets kind of boring after a short while. The closest place for a good time would be Nagoya, 4th largest city in Japan.
A short trip with a rapid train will have you in sprawling Nagoya city center within 25 minutes from Okazaki JR station.Close to Nagoya station you’ll find shops like Big Camera (where I got my laptop) and some of the more red tainted (*wink..wink*) entertainment venues.

Just 2 subway stations away you’ll find Sakae, THE hotspot in Nagoya.
This district has department stores, electronic stores, book stores, fashion and pop stores, foods and drink shops, dicso’s and bars, Live houses and so on.
Using the tv tower as an orientation point it is kind of hard to get lost, though getting a map (I found a Nagoya guide with map at the subway exit, for free) is most helpfull.
Some of the things I did during my visits to Nagoya:
‘Tabe hodai’, all you can eat buffy for 1 hour.

You could go and get your own food on a stick and fry them @ your table. Great fun. With 4 people we had (see above) amount of sticks after 1 hour of gorging. This restaurant is located in the building next to the tv tower, 3rd floor if I remember correctly.

The park that runs trough Sakae hosts live performances on Sundays…

The import store! The perfect place to go shopping if you feel homesick. It imports all the stuff other countries are well known for. Like for instance you will find from Holland: cheese, stroop waffels, chocolate, chocolat spread.
A little taste of home will help you through the long dark periods of Japanese / japanised cusine.

Motown live house / soul bar Garry’s:

A taste of the sites and atmosphere in Sakae …
Some dude in a clown suit promoting something…

Yes they have an apple store..

Did you know that in Japan every city has it’s very own designed man-hole covers? These I found in Nagoya:

Hanami 01

Osashiburi desuuuu. Been a while :)
Here is a small report of my first ever hanami in Japan. I say first, because there was a second. But that’s a post for another time ;).
Generally Japanese spend the few days that the cherry blossoms bloom chatting, eating and drinking with there family and friends underneath the cherry tree’s. Sounds nice, except that everyone in Japan joins in. And as we all know, Japan is a crowded place.

We went with a group of friend to Okazaki castle park. A beautiful park with the castle overlooking the park (some claim the castle provides the best scenic view of Sakura’s in Japan), a temple and rows and rows of Sakura tree’s.
The park is located close to the river. On the banks of the river and in the park there where food stalls where they sell all kinds of festival foods and have games for kids.
(And even a hunted house…..)
Fun times indeed. Around this time the Sakura blossoms where about halfway in bloom and it was rather cold. Enough excuse for another visit!

New laptop and HD

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

OK, so I finally got myself a new laptop. That means I have no more excuse to not post ;P.
For the first post I would like to show of my new laptop and new external hard-drive…

It’s a Western Digital Portable Hard Drive, My Passport.
This little baby is small enough to fit into my pocket, is USB powered and has 500 GB of space. That’s like having one of those magic bags that can fit anything inside no mater how big it is.

And here are the specs. for the laptop…
And it has a Japanese OS… awesome.
Oyea, and if you haven’t noticed, it’s all black and shiny :D.

Immersion with AR using projectors and 3d-glasses.

This is amazing to look at. The best part is between 0:30 and 0:50 when he almost ‘falls’ over the edge.

Amazing 3D immersion technology from IDEO Labs on Vimeo.

“Can I have 2 please?”

Augmented Reality? Well… I guess.

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Well, not really Augmented Reality by the official definitions. But I sure say it’s noteworthy :D

If it’s not AR, I would just call it a good inspiration to think out of the box… or something >_>

Virtual Barbershop

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Ninja!!

Oyea, a day trip to Mie prefecture. The home of ninja!

The Ninja show….

And some pictures from the museum…
Henshing ninja van! Another mystery to solve :P.
