The Latests Concepts and Examples of Augmented Reality
I’ve had a busy time with preparing my presention to show my progress to my teachers. So a lot of updates on the field of AR.
First off: Eminem jumped on the bandwagon by letting us paint a big 3D rendition of theletter “E”: http://www.therelapse.co.uk/3dartcomp/#/elapse

Papermotion by Total Immersion
The latest project by Total Immersion is quite similar to LEGO®. But it’s outside and with newspapers. Have a gander:
AR game for those long driving trips:
Carcade is a game you play in a passenger seat. You point the webcam outside and let the landscape become the level. Some models and music used from starfox here. Good stuff see more at: this link.
12 More after the break
AR Shield: For the fans of Full Metal Alchemist I guess… another novelty-ar-marker, but at least it’s “Not Another Car Commercial®” (NACC®)
Jet Fighter “Demon Helmet”:
The first 4 minutes aren’t really interesting. But the part after that is kinda neat. It lets the pilot look ‘through the jet’ to it’s surroundings!
AR Field Guide: This application lets the user identify leaves. Still kinda clunky to be of good use, but I like the fact it’s outdoor, in the field, and not in a controlled environment.
Joe Warpin: Here you hold a custom handheld device to look at a marker. With this you pilot a helicopter as you move around the marker and through the device you need to sniper down “jihad activists”. Made by students (!). Though i’m sure i’ve seen the concept somewhere else.
Nokia’s Point and Find:
Weirdest host ever, but this video shows Nokia’s Point and Find. Basically an application on a phone which lets it recognize movie posters and gives online ratings and feedback. And directs you to the nearest cinema playing the movie. The application doesn’t work on movie-posters alone ofcourse. Many real-life objects can be recognized.
The official site states it’s only availble in US and UK, and it’s still in ‘beta’. Which is just a 2.0 word for disclaiming it doesn’t work properly but you can allready use it to create word-of-mouth imo. Great development none-the-less! It’s obvious Nokia is spending a lot of time in AR. Don’t be surprised if the next-gen phones will be dominated by Nokia instead of Apple.

Augmented reality campaign by AtPlay for Wordsworth
People in South-Africa got handed a special flyer with a marker. In the shopping window of a bookstore they could hold it in front of a camera and on a screen they could see an animation start. Nothing spectacular that isn’t novel. But it got the job done. People got in and bought the book.
Gestural AR?
Some guy connected AR to Ribbit (which are all excellently combined within Flash). With this setup, he can start a phone call without using his keyboard or mouse. Whether this is truly gestural can be up for debate, the mouse/keyboard are just as much an input device as holding a picture in front of a webcam. Small step towards true gestures, but a step none-the-less.
SAP EcuHub: Nothing spectacular. Not even sure it does anything… Another sign of novelty-AR going mainstream.
EON Cup Final: Though it’s novelty-AR. I still found it kinda funny. This marker will let you hold up a championship cup. Props to the modelling and texturing of the cup.
Not Another Car Commercial® (NACC®). This time by Nissan:
Though cARvertisement (see what I did there?) was once the best looking form of ARvertising (Toyota IQ: pic), the new cARvertisments just feel too late. Or as we dutch say it, “hose eleven is giving mud”.
To make it even worse, the site itself isn’t that well designed. With novelty-AR you get results as fast as you can print out the marker, but here you have to make some choices before you can get to the candy. Once you finally got to that candy, you might be curious how the other cars look like. But it just takes too long to click through the questions…

TANKS!! (novelty-AR)
Quite funny, mini tanks come out of the marker to invade your room. :D
X-Ray Vision
Title says it all. But is it really x-ray vision? It only seem to work in certain enviroments, where the actual x-ray vision is based on pre-composed footage. Like google maps isn’t really an up to date view of your street, but a snapshot that could date over 5 years ago…
… would be cool to be able to peep into the ladies room though ^^
that’s all for now!
